Pilates is a system of controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition of the body.
It is a combination of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, minimises the risk of injury, reduces stress and creates long lean muscles.
Pilates works several different muscle groups at once through smooth, continuous flowing movements, with the focus on strengthening and stabilising the core - abdominals, back and pelvic region.
In Pilates we concentrate on the quality of the movement rather than the quantity, which makes you feel refreshed rather than exhausted. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked. You are encouraged to concentrate on how you are feeling, which promotes a true mind/body workout.
Joseph Pilates 1880 - 1967
Joseph Pilates was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany. Following a sickly childhood, he developed a series of exercises to strengthen his body and improve his health, as he believed that our modern life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing were the roots of poor health.
He fine-tuned his regime while interned in England during the First World War, helping fellow internees resisit a flu epidemic. Following the War he returned to Germany and then moved to New York, where he opened his first studio, drawing a following with dancers.
The Pilates method gained a far wider audience in the 1990’s, and with such positive results it is now far more than a passing fad.
